Fugitive Mehul Choksi Arrested in Belgium on India's Extradition Demand

Mehul Choksi, the elusive figure at the center of one of India’s biggest banking frauds, was detained in Belgium, marking a major win for Indian law enforcement. With India’s demand for his return gaining traction, preparations are underway to bring the fugitive back to answer for his alleged crimes.

After the extradition of terrorist Tahawwur Rana, India may soon get another success. It is reported that fugitive businessman Mehul Chowksi, who fled after committing a big bank scam, has been arrested in Belgium. The special thing is that this arrest has happened at a time when the Indian government has requested his extradition. 

PNB Scam accused arrested in Belgium

Diamond businessman Choksi is wanted in the fraud case of more than Rs 13,500 crore in PNB i.e. Punjab National Bank. Media reports are quoting sources that Choksi has been arrested on the request of central agencies like CBI and ED. It is reported that his wife Preeti Choksi is a Belgian citizen.

An official has informed that Choksi was arrested on Saturday and it will take time for him to get bail. He has also told that the CBI is in touch with the Belgian authorities to work on the extradition request.

Vigilance was giving fake documents
Media reports were claiming that Choksi had used fake documents to stay in Belgium to avoid extradition to India. 

The names of Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are also involved in the thousands of crores of rupees scam of PNB. In the year 2022, ED filed the third chargesheet against Mehul, Preeti Choksi and others. There are reports that Nirav is currently lodged in a London jail and he is also engaged in efforts against extradition to India.

Antigua Action
An Interpol red notice was issued against Chaurasia in 2018, but it was withdrawn in November 2022. Chaurasia had alleged that Indian agents had kidnapped him from Antigua and Barbuda and taken him to Dominica via yacht on 23 May 2021.
