Data from two of India's prominent quick commerce platforms indicates that households across the nation were busy stocking up on party essentials. As the clock approached midnight, cities were abuzz with activity, showcasing a clear trend towards home gatherings and celebrations.

A Look at New Year's Eve Orders

On December 31, 2024, as people prepared to welcome the new year, snacks emerged as the most popular choice among consumers. Blinkit reported an impressive delivery of 230,000 packets of aloo bhujia by 8 PM. Meanwhile, Swiggy Instamart experienced a peak in chip orders, reaching an astonishing rate of 853 orders per minute around 7:30 PM. This surge in snack consumption underscores the festive atmosphere that characterized the night.

Beverage Trends and Party Essentials

The demand for beverages also skyrocketed, with Blinkit delivering over 6,800 packets of ice cubes by 8 PM. The popularity of cold drinks was evident as Big Basket recorded a staggering 1,290% increase in ice cube orders during the same timeframe. Additionally, non-alcoholic beverages saw sales rise by 552%, while disposable cups and plates increased by 325%, highlighting the prevalence of house parties across India.

Phani Kishan A, co-founder of Swiggy Instamart, tweeted about the peak delivery time for ice, stating, “Ice hit its peak at 7:41 PM with 119 kgs delivered in that minute!” This moment encapsulated the excitement and preparation that defined New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Surprising Sales Trends

In an unexpected twist, condom sales also saw a significant uptick as the evening unfolded. By midday on December 31, Swiggy Instamart had already delivered nearly 4,800 packs of condoms. As the night progressed, Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa revealed that over 120,000 packs were en route to customers by late evening. Notably, chocolate-flavored condoms accounted for 39% of sales, followed by strawberry at 31% and bubblegum at 19%.Swiggy Instamart further highlighted unique customer requests for items like blindfolds and handcuffs during this celebratory period.

The data from New Year's Eve paints a vivid picture of how Indians embraced the occasion with enthusiasm and creativity. From snacks to beverages and even intimate essentials, online ordering trends reflect a society eager to celebrate together at home.
