New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded the alarm for North India, particularly Delhi-NCR, as temperatures soar and a heat wave warning is issued. Following a brief respite with light rain on Friday, scorching heat has gripped the region once again, intensifying over the weekend. Residents are bracing themselves for sweltering conditions, with the mercury expected to hit a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius.

Extended period of heat

According to the IMD's forecast, the prevailing heatwave is anticipated to persist for the next 4-5 days, extending the discomfort for residents. Minimum temperatures are projected to hover between 19 to 22 degrees Celsius until April 12, while maximum temperatures are set to surge between 36 to 39 degrees Celsius during the same period. Certain areas may even witness temperatures nearing the 40-degree mark, exacerbating the heatwave conditions.

Heatwave spreads across North India

The scorching weather isn't confined to Delhi-NCR alone; it's expected to blanket several states across North India, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. Daytime temperatures in these regions are forecasted to range between 35 to 40 degrees Celsius, intensifying the heatwave impact.

Rain relief in some areas

While North India grapples with the heatwave, relief may be in sight for other parts of the country. Regions like West Bengal, the Himalayan belt, and the North East are likely to experience rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Moreover, Madhya Pradesh could witness light to moderate showers in specific areas such as Gwalior-Chambal and Mahakaushal, offering respite from the scorching temperatures.

Heatwave alerts and rain forecasts

The IMD has issued heatwave alerts for states including Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Telangana, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Additionally, lightning and rain are expected in parts of the North East and Madhya Pradesh, with rain forecasts for East Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Kerala.
