New Delhi: Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, renowned as "The Liver Doctor," has recently shared a tragic case that highlightes the severe repercussions of alcohol abuse. The Kerala-based liver specialist recounted the tragic story of a 39-year-old man whose excessive drinking led to his untimely death from multiple organ failure.

The life and loss of the drinker

According to Dr. Philips, the patient was a prominent figure with substantial wealth, inherited from his father’s timber and steel businesses. Despite his financial comfort, the man’s indulgence in binge drinking—consuming up to a liter of dark rum and whiskey daily during periodic heavy drinking sessions—proved fatal. He frequently hosted lavish parties where his alcohol consumption was celebrated by friends and family.

However, his life took a tragic turn when he was found by neighbors lying in vomit outside his house. Despite being in poor condition, he resisted medical help, and his friends, who noticed his deteriorating state, were unable to persuade him to seek immediate care. That evening, he resumed drinking and, by morning, was found in critical condition with severe complications including multiple organ failure and coma.

Toll of alcoholosim

When the man was finally brought to Dr. Philips’ care, he was already in a dire state, requiring a ventilator and dialysis. Despite his family's financial resources and potential liver donors, it was too late for a transplant. The patient eventually succumbed to his condition, dying last week after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage and cardiac arrest.

Warning against repercussions of alcohol

Dr. Philips concludes with a powerful message about the perils of alcohol consumption. "It is only a matter of time before your life flashes in front of you unpredictably - and if alcohol features in that frame, you'll never know it coming because alcohol only makes you see what it wants you to see. You are all slaves to its false dopamine hit, while your brain degenerates under its control."
