Rafale-Marine fighter jets: In a significant move, France has officially responded to India's tender, expressing its interest in supplying 26 Rafale-Marine fighter jets for the Indian Navy's aircraft carriers, INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya.

French Response to India's Tender

France's response to India's Letter of Acceptance has been submitted in New Delhi by a delegation of French government officials specialising in military sales to foreign nations. This marks a crucial step in the procurement process.

Detailed Study and Negotiations

Indian defence sources report that a comprehensive examination of the French bid, including the commercial offer for the aircraft, will now be conducted by Indian officials. Subsequent negotiations, being a government-to-government contract, will involve discussions with French government representatives.

Swift Project Execution

The Navy Chief has emphasised expediting the project to ensure a timely finalisation and swift induction of the Rafale-Marine planes into the Indian Navy's inventory. The timeframe for the project is a key focus to meet operational needs promptly.

Letter of Request and Fast-Track Mode

More than a month ago, India issued the Letter of Request (LoR) to the French government, outlining specific requirements for the Rafale-Marine aircraft. The Indian Navy and government are operating in a fast-track mode to facilitate a speedy acquisition process.

Defence Acquisition Council Approval

The deal, valued at approximately Euro 5.5 billion, received approval from the Defence Acquisition Council just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to France in July, where he was a state guest for the Bastille Day parade. The proposed agreement includes 22 single-seated Rafale-Marine aircraft and four trainer aircraft for the Indian Navy.

As both nations move towards negotiations, the acquisition of these advanced fighter jets aims to bolster India's naval capabilities in the strategically vital Indian Ocean region.
