Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to France has reinforced the strong bond between the two nations, highlighting their shared commitment to bilateral cooperation and addressing global challenges.

Strategic Partnership Takes Center Stage

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating bilateral cooperation during Modi's two-day trip to France. The leaders engaged in extensive discussions covering various topics, including the Indo-Pacific region and the Russia-Ukraine war.

They emphasized the importance of their strategic partnership and explored opportunities for collaboration in defense, nuclear energy, space, technology, and innovation. The Indian government highlighted the significance of these talks, particularly in light of the recent AI Action Summit and the upcoming India-France Year of Innovation in 2026.

Defense Cooperation and Technological Advancements

The leaders celebrated the commissioning of the INS Vaghsheer, the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene-class project, on January 15, 202528. They welcomed ongoing discussions on missiles, helicopter engines, and jet engines, praising the collaboration between the Safran group and their Indian counterparts. Modi invited the French Army to consider acquiring the Pinaka MBRL system, while Macron welcomed India's inclusion as an observer in the Eurodrone MALE program. Both leaders also acknowledged the regular military exercises, including the French Carrier Strike Group Charles De Gaulle's visit to India and India's participation in the French multinational exercise La Perouse.

Global Issues and Shared Commitments

Modi and Macron addressed international issues, including the Middle East and the war in Ukraine, agreeing to coordinate efforts and maintain regular engagement. They underscored their commitment to a free, open, inclusive, secure, and peaceful Indo-Pacific region. The leaders also condemned cross-border terrorism, emphasizing the need to disrupt terrorism financing networks and safe havens. They agreed that no country should provide refuge to those who finance, plan, support, or commit terrorist acts, reaffirming their commitment to work together in the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and other multilateral platforms.

AI, Innovation, and Cultural Exchange

Modi's visit included co-chairing the AI Action Summit in Paris, where discussions focused on harnessing AI for economic growth and addressing global challenges. Both nations are working to strengthen ties in emerging technologies, including clean energy, cybersecurity, and digital innovation. Modi and Macron also jointly inaugurated India’s Consulate General in Marseille and visited the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor facility.
