New Delhi: Former Jharkhand Minister Saryu Roy has officially joined the Janata Dal (United), as announced by the party's national working president, Sanjay Kumar Jha, on Sunday. Roy, who is an independent MLA from Jamshedpur East, was welcomed into the party in the presence of senior JD (U) leaders and ministers Shrawan Kumar and Ashok Choudhary, the latter also being the JD's in-charge for Jharkhand.

Strategic Move Before Elections

This significant political move follows a recent meeting between Roy and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. During their discussion, Roy hinted at a possible alliance with the JD (U) ahead of the upcoming Jharkhand assembly elections later this year. Roy, previously a BJP leader, left the party before the 2019 assembly elections and famously defeated the then Chief Minister Raghubar Das.

Roy's Political Legacy

Roy is widely recognized for his pivotal role in exposing the fodder scam, which severely impacted the government of undivided Bihar in the 1990s. The scam led to the conviction of RJD president Lalu Prasad. Roy's close friendship with Nitish Kumar is well-known, and his entry into the JD (U) is expected to bolster the party's presence in Jharkhand.

Strengthening JD's Base

Welcoming Roy to the JD (U) family, Sanjay Kumar Jha expressed confidence in the positive impact of this development. "He (Roy) has a personal relationship with the JD(U) national president and Bihar's honorable CM. I am confident that Mr. Roy's joining will strengthen the party base in Jharkhand," Jha posted on X.

JD (U)'s Focus on Jharkhand

With the JD (U) emerging as the third-largest constituent of the NDA, boasting 12 MPs following the Lok Sabha elections, the party is now keen on fortifying its position in Jharkhand ahead of the state elections.
