In a significant legal development, a Goa court has sentenced Vikat Bhagat to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of Daniel McLaughlin, an Irish-British national. The case, which dates back nearly seven years, reached its conclusion on Monday. McLaughlin’s lifeless body was found on March 14, 2017, in a forest area in Canacona, South Goa.
Vikat Bhagat was convicted on Friday for the heinous crime of raping and murdering McLaughlin. On Monday, the court not only handed Bhagat a life sentence but also imposed fines for his actions. Bhagat was fined ₹25,000 for the rape and murder charges, and an additional ₹10,000 for destroying evidence. In addition to the life imprisonment, he was sentenced to two years in prison, which will run concurrently with his other sentences.
Daniel McLaughlin's mother, Andrea Branigan, expressed gratitude on behalf of the family and friends of the victim. Through lawyer Vikram Verma, she issued a statement, saying, "We are thankful to everyone who fought for justice in Daniel’s case. People treated Daniel as their own daughter and fought for her.” The family acknowledged that their efforts had finally paid off with Bhagat's conviction.
Inspector Filomena Costa, who was closely involved in the investigation, confirmed that every aspect of the case was handled meticulously. She expressed satisfaction with the verdict, calling it a victory for justice.
According to the charges filed by Goa Police, Daniel McLaughlin had visited Goa in March 2017, where she befriended Vikat Bhagat. However, during their time together, Bhagat raped McLaughlin and then killed her by striking her with a stone. The police found bloodstains near her body, and signs of severe injuries on her remains.
This verdict is being hailed as a major legal triumph in Goa, where justice has finally been served for Daniel McLaughlin, and her killer has been punished.
