New Delhi: Sudha Yadav, a student at the Indian Institution of Mass Communication, had recently taken to social media to complain about the irregularities in the placement of the university and harassment by professor. Upon taking such actions, Sudha claimed that she had previously expected that upon this action of hers, she would have to face discrimination in the placement drive of her college, but she did not expect that she would be facing social and mental harassment in front of her peers.

Harrasment in front of peers

She mentions the incident when the media outlet Lallantop was conducting a test for the campus placement drive. The head of the IIMC placement committee, Professor Rakesh Upadhyay, saw her and lost his cool.

In a class full of students and recruiters, the professor shouted at Sudha, blamed her for tarnishing the image of the institute, and defamed it on social media platform Twitter. She has no right to sit in any kind of placement drive after what she has done. She should not have her placement exam paper eligible for the placement drive. This verbal, social, and mental harassment continued for at least 7 to 8 minutes continuously in front of the recruiters.

Emotional breakdown of the student

In a Twitter post Sudha  wrote,’ After a while, I could not take the one-sided attacks anymore and broke down in tears. When I ran away from the class, the professor said that he would make sure that I did not get a job anywhere.I would ruin your career.’.

This is a clear display of how freely a student studying in a public institution can exercise their right to freedom of speech when they are suffering because of a problem caused by the institution, but instead, if someone shares their grievances via an online platform, the person is getting open threats from the professors that their career will be ruined. This kind of action from authorities discourages students from raising their voice.

Complaint against authorities

Sudha filed a complaint against this mental and social harassment with the Internal Complaints Committee of the college and has requested permission to file a police complaint.

The matter does not end here; the professor tried to persuade the student and texted her on WhatsApp in a sweet tone, claiming to have her best interests at heart.
