Lok Sabha witnessed one of the most controversial Centre vs Opposition sessions on Wednesday (August 09). From Rahul Gandhi’s firm claims to BJP’s retort, everything that happened at the Parliament yesterday became the talk of the town. After Centre’s Smriti Irani’s attack over the opposition claims, Union Home Minister Amit Shah took charge. He discussed various issues and did a fierce attack on the opposition bloc, INDIA. During the discussion, he also talked about the much-awaited issue of the current hour – the Manipur row.

The union minister asserted that he has been working hard on bringing peace to Manipur and has been monitoring the situation closely since violence broke erupted on May 03.

He also recalled how Prime Minister Narendra Modi randomly called him at 4 am and 6.30 am on two consecutive days when reports of clashes came in Manipur.

Amit Shah’s counter-attack came amid the opposition’s constant demands for the prime minister to address the issue prevailing in the strife-torn Manipur.

Addressing the parliament, Shah said, “I want to tell the whole country, the Prime Minister called me at 4 in the night and also at 6.30 the next morning. And they (opposition) are saying Modi ji doesn’t bother at all.”

Union Home Minister briefs about Centre’s steps to control situation

Giving a piece of detailed information on the steps taken by the central government within 24 hours since the violence erupted between the hill-majority Kuki tribe and the valley-majority Meiteis, he said, “For three days, continuously, we worked round the clock. We held 16 video conferences, sent 36,000 CAPF (central cops) personnel immediately, used air force planes, changed the Chief Secretary and DGP (police chief), and sent an adviser from Surat; the centre sent Chief Secretary and DGP too. All this was done on May 4 itself.”

Further, the union minister also rejected the opposition’s call for the imposition of the President’s rule in BJP-ruled Manipur under Article 356 of the Constitution as playing politics over violence.

“They (opposition) keep saying why we didn’t apply (Article) 356? (Article) 356 is applied when during turmoil the state government doesn’t cooperate. We changed the DGP, the state accepted the centre’s decision. We changed the Chief Secretary, and the state accepted the decision,” Shah said.

Attack on opposition over demands for CM Biren’s resignation

Responding to the opposition’s query why Chief Minister N Biren Singh has not been replaced, Amit Shah said, “The chief minister is replaced only when the CM doesn’t cooperate. This CM is cooperating.”

Apart from the opposition, the Kuki tribe have also been repeatedly demanding the resignation of the chief minister. In June, the centre’s proposed peace talks with all communities in Manipur failed due to Singh’s participation in the dialogue team. The Kukis did not agree to the talks as CM Biren Singh would be present, after which Manipur’s umbrella civil society group COCOMI also decided not to participate in the planned talks.

In June, he visited Manipur for three days, where he met people from both communities and looked into the relief arrangements for thousands of internally displaced people.

Since the violence sparked in the northeastern state, more than 140 people have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced to a safer place.
