Flights cancelled due to heavy rains in Mumbai; Govt asks to stay home

Due to extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai, all the major airlines have cancelled their flights and have promised refunds or rescheduling of the flights. The city has received almost 27 percent of the season's rainfall in one day.

Heavy rainfall and low visibility on Monday significantly disrupted flight operations at Mumbai airport. Approximately 50 incoming flights were either cancelled or diverted to airports like Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Indore. Airport authorities prioritized arrivals, leading to delayed departures as they accommodated diverted flights.

Conditions in Mumbai

Mumbai has experienced heavy showers since Sunday, causing extensive waterlogging in areas like Worli, Buntara Bhavan, Kurla East, King's Circle, and Dadar. Reports of waterlogging on railway tracks led to train cancellations, delays, and crowded stations. Colaba received 83.8 mm and Santacruz 267.9 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, with Mumbai recording a total of 2,547 mm, 27% of its average annual rainfall for the same period, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Condition of Mumbai Airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) issued an advisory for passengers to check flight statuses with airlines and arrive early. All the major airlines including Vistara, Air India, Spicejet, and Indigo informed the passengers about the suspension of their respective airline's activities and they regret causing such inconvenience to their buyers.

Advisory issued by BMC Due to the anticipated heavy rainfall, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) declared a half-day holiday for government and private schools and colleges within its jurisdiction. According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department on Monday morning, Mumbai is expected to experience "generally cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain in the city and its suburbs."
