New Delhi: A devastating fire broke out on an Indian Navy warship undergoing maintenance at the Mumbai naval dockyard today. In the aftermath of the fire, a junior sailor has been reported missing. The navy reports that all other personnel on board are safe and accounted for.

Indian Navy releases official statement

"The fire was brought under control by the ship's crew with assistance of firefighters from Naval Dockyard, Mumbai and other ships in harbour, by (Monday) morning. Further, follow-on actions including sanitisation checks for assessment of residual risk of fire were carried out," the navy said in a statement.

The navy said later on, the ship started listing to one side. "Despite all efforts, the ship could not be brought to an upright position. The ship continued to list further alongside her berth and is presently resting on one side," the navy said.

"All personnel have been accounted for except one junior sailor, for whom the search is in progress. An inquiry has been ordered by the Indian Navy to investigate the accident," the navy said.

The fire was brought under control by the ship's crew and firefighters from the Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, and other nearby ships by Monday morning. However, despite efforts to stabilize the ship, it began listing to one side in the afternoon and eventually came to rest on its side.

Investigation is underway

An investigation has been launched by the Indian Navy to determine the cause of the accident. The INS Brahmaputra, commissioned in 2000, is a guided missile frigate with a crew of 370 personnel and is equipped with advanced weaponry and sensors.
