New Delhi: Kumari Selja, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, has accused the BJP government of deliberately delaying municipal elections in Haryana out of fear of losing. The former Union Minister and Sirsa MP stated that the BJP's political footing in the state has weakened, prompting the government to postpone elections for 8 municipal corporations, 4 municipal councils, and 21 municipalities.

Selja pointed out that only three of Haryana's 11 municipal corporations—Panchkula, Ambala City, and Sonipat—are currently governed by elected representatives. The newly established Manesar Municipal Corporation has yet to hold its first election, while the terms of Gurgaon and Faridabad corporations expired long ago. Other municipal bodies, including those in Hisar, Panipat, Rohtak, Yamunanagar, and Karnal, have also seen their tenures end without elections being held.

In a media statement, Selja claimed that the BJP is conspiring to control the cities through appointed officials rather than elected representatives. She also criticized the state government for undermining village panchayats under the pretense of e-tendering, which she argued strips local bodies of their rightful powers. Selja emphasized that the absence of elected bodies has stalled development work and left budgets unresolved. She warned that without councillors, officials are left to make decisions without public input, which hampers effective city governance.
