The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned National Conference patron and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah for questioning on Thursday in an alleged money laundering case.
The 86-year-old politician has been asked to appear at the ED's Srinagar office. He is reportedly being investigated in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).
Abdullah was formally charged by the probe agency in the case last year. According to the ED, the case involves the misappropriation of JKCA funds through transfers to various personal bank accounts, including those of unrelated parties and JKCA office bearers. Unexplained cash withdrawals from JKCA accounts also occurred.
The ED's probe stems from a 2018 chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation against the same accused individuals.
Abdullah becomes the latest opposition leader to be summoned by the agency after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren and others.
Last April, the ED questioned Abdullah's son Omar Abdullah in a separate Jammu and Kashmir bank fraud case.
The 86-year-old Abdullah continues to serve as Member of Parliament for the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency. He has not yet commented publicly on the ED summons.
