Farmers' Protest: Security forces deployed tear gas shells to disperse farmers gathered at the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu Border amid the 'Bharat Bandh' called by several farmers' unions. The ongoing protests have led to heightened restrictions in Delhi-NCR.
Police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse farmers protesting at the Punjab-Haryana border. Images from the Shambhu border depicted farmers hastily retreating to evade the tear gas shells aimed in their direction.
Tragically, a 63-year-old farmer participating in the protest at the Shambhu border suffered a fatal heart attack.
The farmers' agitation has entered its fourth day, coinciding with the nationwide 'Bharat Bandh' from 6 am to 4 pm. Demonstrating their resolve, farmers plan to stage a significant 'chakka jam' across major Indian thoroughfares from 12 pm to 4 pm.
Stringent measures have been imposed in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), including the enforcement of Section 144, prohibiting large gatherings. Traffic disruptions have been reported, notably at the Gazipur border due to police barricades erected in response to the farmers' protest.
Thursday's extensive discussions between leaders of protesting farmers' unions and three Union ministers failed to yield any breakthrough. The farmers remain steadfast in their demands, notably seeking legal assurance for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of their agricultural produce.
The protests underscore the deep-seated grievances of farmers, particularly regarding MSP guarantees and agricultural reforms. As the standoff persists, both sides remain entrenched in their positions, with negotiations ongoing to find a resolution to the impasse.
