The death of a youth from Punjab during farmers' protest has led to opposition leaders targeting the Centre. Some leaders have alleged that the death was caused by police brutality. However, the Centre has denied these allegations and said that the death was not caused by police action.

The incident has sparked protests in Punjab and other parts of India.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his sorrow at the passing of a young farmer near the Punjab-Haryana border and promised to take strong measures against those accountable.

"The news of the death of 21-year-old Shubhakaran was received today during the incident at Khanuri border. It is very sad that the youth of my state is no longer in this world. I want to ask the central government why the farmer of Punjab cannot go to the capital of his own country? We express our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Shubhakaran in this hour of sorrow. We assure to help the family financially and socially in all aspects. After the post-mortem, appropriate action will be taken against the responsible officials," he said.

Meanwhile, responding to Bhagwant Mann’s tweet, Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi slammed government asking was it for this day that we fought for independence?

"The death of Punjab's young man Shubhakaran is very sad. Was it for this day that we fought for independence, that one day the governments elected by us in our own country will martyr our own sons like the British? We are completely with Shubhakaran and will ensure strict punishment to his murderers," Kejriwal said in a post on X.

As farmers protested and tried to move barriers, Haryana Police opened fire with tear gas shells, escalating tensions at the border posts at Shambhu and Khanauri this morning. The march was halted for the next two days, according to Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sarwan Singh Pandher, General Secretary, and a decision about the future would be made on Friday, February 23.

Farmers are our Annadatas, says Anurag Thakur

Union Minister Anurag Thakur stated that the government is always willing to have a conversation with farmers, highlighting that dialogue is the only way to address farmers' issues and that farmers are the country's "Annadatas."

The Union Minister further attacked the UPA administration, claiming that more money has been set aside for farmers by the Modi administration than by the UPA throughout its rule.
