The Punjab Police registered a murder case Wednesday night in the death of farmer Shubhkaran Singh during clashes between protesting farmers and Haryana security personnel at the Khanauri border point last week.

Singh (21), a native of Bathinda, was killed in the clashes on February 21. Twelve security personnel were also injured in the violence.

The FIR was filed under sections 302 (murder) and 114 (abettor present when offence is committed) of the Indian Penal Code at the Patran Police station in Patiala.

The complaint was lodged by Singh's father against an unidentified person. The reported location was listed as Garhi in Haryana's Jind district near Khanauri.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said, "Today is the 17th day of the march at the Khanauri and Shambhu border. We have received information that an FIR has been filed under sections 302 and 114 of the IPC (for the death of Shubhkaran Singh)... Also today we will take the body of the deceased to the Khanauri border and his last rites will be performed at his native village."

The protest turned violent when some farmers tried to breach police barricades blocking their "Delhi Chalo" march.

Farmer leaders insisted on the FIR being filed before allowing Singh's post-mortem. His body remains at the Rajindra Hospital mortuary in Patiala.

Singh is expected to be cremated Thursday. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had announced Rs 1 crore compensation and a government job for Singh's sister.

Earlier, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) leading the protests decided to pause the 'Delhi Chalo' march until February 29. "We will decide the next course of action on February 29," said Pandher at a Khanauri press conference.

The SKM (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are pressing the Centre to accept demands including legal MSP guarantees and farm loan waivers.

Protesters, mostly from Punjab, have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri. Leaders said they will remain until February 29 when the next steps will be planned.
