Farmers' Protest: Punjab and Haryana High Court has initiated a probe, appointing a three-member panel, headed by a retired High Court judge, to investigate the death of farmer Shubhkaran Singh.
In a scathing rebuke, the Punjab and Haryana High Court admonished farmer leaders involved in the protests for using "children as shields." The court directed severe criticism towards the Punjab and Haryana governments, holding them accountable for failing to uphold their responsibilities adequately.
"Children being used as shields! This is shameful, absolutely shameful. Look at the age of children. It was a war-like situation... they (protestors) have created such a situation, to say later that women and children were injured," remarked a division bench comprising ACJ GS Sandhawalia and Justice Lapita Banerji.
The court's stern reaction followed the presentation of several protest images by the counsel representing the Haryana government.
Expressing deep concern, the court highlighted the distressing practice of placing children at the forefront of protests. It questioned the moral integrity of parents involved, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
Furthermore, the High Court demanded explanations from the Haryana government regarding the decision to resort to firing during the February 21 protests. The violence during the protest led to the tragic demise of 22-year-old farmer Shubhkaran Singh from Bathinda district.
In response to the delayed investigation into Shubhkaran Singh's death, the High Court reprimanded the Haryana government and established a three-member panel. Led by a retired High Court judge, the panel will be assisted by two retired ADGP-ranked officers from Punjab and Haryana.
"The investigation into the death cannot be given to Haryana or Punjab for obvious reasons, hence a retired High Court judge will be appointed, who will be assisted by two retired officers of the rank of ADGP from Punjab and Haryana," stated the court.
Farmers from Punjab and Haryana continue their 'Dilli Chalo' protest march, advocating for various demands, including a legal guarantee on a minimum support price for crops. Presently encamped at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana, the protestors remain steadfast in their demands amidst ongoing tensions.
