Farmers' Protest: Congress has taken a firm stance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reminding him of his pre-election pledge to provide Minimum Support Price (MSP) to farmers. Pawan Khera, Congress Media and Publicity Chairman, highlighted the Modi government's failure to honour its commitments regarding MSP and condemned the forceful obstruction of farmers marching towards Delhi.

Swaminathan Commission Recommendations

Khera emphasized that out of the 201 recommendations put forth by the Swaminathan Commission, the UPA government had implemented 175 recommendations. Congress leadership, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, announced the decision to legally guarantee MSP for crops—a historic move benefitting 62 crore farmers across the nation.

Historical Context and Betrayal

Addressing Prime Minister Modi's past advocacy for MSP, Khera recalled Modi's previous support for MSP as Chief Minister of Gujarat. However, he accused Modi of reneging on his promises post-2014 elections, exposing his falsehoods regarding MSP and profit margins for farmers. The BJP government's refusal to provide 50 percent profit on the cost of production further compounds the betrayal, as confirmed by official government responses to RTI queries.

Lack of Accountability and Ongoing Farmer Protests

Khera criticised the Modi government's failure to fulfil promises made during previous protests and the absence of concrete action or committees to address farmer concerns. Instead, farmers protesting for MSP are met with harsh repression, including the use of rubber bullets and tear gas, further exacerbating tensions.

Call for Apology and Accountability

Congress demands accountability from Prime Minister Modi, calling for an apology for his broken promises, false accusations against farmers, and the government's failure to address farmer grievances. The betrayal experienced by farmers under the BJP government is unprecedented in post-independence India, warranting urgent redress and acknowledgment from the highest levels of leadership.

In conclusion, Congress stands firm in its demand for justice and accountability for farmers, urging Prime Minister Modi to acknowledge and rectify the government's failures regarding MSP and agricultural policies.
