New Delhi: In a tragic incident near Mumbai's Lonavala, a family of seven faced a horrifying ordeal when they were swept away by a swollen waterfall. The group, comprising a man, a woman, and children, had ventured out for a picnic near the Bhusi Dam backwaters amid heavy monsoon rains. The family, holidaying just 80 km from Mumbai, chose a popular spot for picnicking despite the increased water flow due to the overflowing dam. Terrifying footage captured their futile struggle against the relentless current before they were overwhelmed. Despite desperate cries for help from onlookers, the swift currents made rescue efforts impossible.

Rescue efforts underway

The incident unfolded around 1:30 pm, prompting immediate response from locals and police equipped with ropes and trekking gear. By nightfall, three bodies had been recovered, with efforts set to resume at daybreak.

Concerns over safety

The tragic event has raised serious concerns about safety measures at the waterfall and downstream at the Bhusi Dam. Locals speculated that slippery conditions on mossy boulders may have caused the fatal slip into the reservoir.

Lack of security measures

Disturbing videos also surfaced showing tourists near the dam's edge and food stalls dangerously close to the raging waters, highlighting the absence of adequate safety protocols. Authorities are yet to verify the authenticity of these videos.
