Even if everything fails, Chandrayaan-3 lander will touch the Moon: ISRO chairman

S Somnath, ISRO chairman announced on Tuesday that Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar mission will be able to make a soft landing on the Moon’s surface with ‘Vikram’ lander on August 23.

The chief said that they have planned everything in a way that if all the sensors and two of its engines do not work, it gets land smoothly.

Somnath while talking about ‘Chandrayaan-3: Bharat’s Pride Space Mission’, hosted by the non-profit organisation Disha Bharat, claimed that the lander ‘Vikram’ has been designed in such a way that it will be able to handle the failures.

“If everything fails, if all the sensors fail, nothing works, still it (Vikram) will make a landing. That’s how it has been designed, provided that the propulsion system works well,” Somnath said.

According to the latest update from ISRO, LBN#2 is successfully completed. The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is in 170 km x 4313 km orbit around the moon.

It is to be noted here that the spacecraft of Chandrayaan-3 successfully entered the lunar orbit on Saturday and has travelled nearly two-thirds of the distance to the Moon since its launch on July 14.

The spacecraft will make the soft landing in the South Polar region of the Moon on August 23, 2023.
