Maharashtra: On January 22, 2025, a devastating train accident unfolded in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district when passengers aboard the Pushpak Express jumped onto the tracks in a panic, fearing a fire. This hasty decision led to a catastrophic collision with the Bengaluru Express, resulting in at least 12 fatalities and several injuries.
The tragedy occurred around 4:19 PM near Paranda railway station. Passengers noticed smoke coming from the train’s wheels and, fearing a potential fire, pulled the emergency chain and exited the train. Central Railway's chief spokesperson, Swapnil Nila, confirmed that some passengers stepped down onto the tracks just as the Bengaluru Express was approaching.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences and ordered medical assistance for the injured. The accident site is located over 400 kilometers from Mumbai, prompting immediate action from railway officials. A senior railway official stated that preliminary reports indicated sparks inside one of the Pushpak Express coaches were due to either a "hot axle" or "brake-binding."
As investigations continue, Maharashtra's guardian minister for Jalgaon, Gulabrao Patil, assured that senior officials are being dispatched to assess the situation.
