The Assembly Elections 2024 in both Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana concluded on October 5, with the counting of votes scheduled for tomorrow, October 8, beginning at 8 AM. In Haryana, all 90 Assembly constituencies voted on the same day, while Jammu and Kashmir followed a phased approach, with voting held on September 18 (24 seats), September 25 (26 seats), and October 1 (40 seats).
The key political contenders in Haryana include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD). The JJP has entered into an alliance with the Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram), while the INLD has tied up with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).
In Jammu and Kashmir, major parties in the fray are the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (JKPDP), Congress, and BJP. Other notable participants include the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) led by Altaf Bukhari, Sajad Gani Lone’s Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference (JKPC), and Engineer Rashid's Jammu and Kashmir Awami Ittehad Party.
Haryana’s voter base stands at 2.03 crore. Notable candidates include Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini (BJP) from Ladwa, Bhupinder Singh Hooda (Congress) from Garhi Sampla-Kiloi, Vinesh Phogat (Congress) from Julana, and Gopal Goyal Kanda (HLP) from Sirsa. In the 2019 elections, BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 40 seats but fell short of a majority. A coalition with the JJP, which secured 10 seats, allowed BJP’s Manohar Lal Khattar to form a government.
Jammu and Kashmir has 88.6 lakh registered voters. Prominent candidates include Omar Abdullah (JKNC) from Ganderbal, Iltija Mehbooba Mufti (JKPDP) from Srigufwara-Bijbehara, Ravinder Raina (BJP) from Nowshera, and Sajad Gani Lone (JKPC) from Handwara. In 2014, the JKPDP became the largest party with 28 seats, forming a coalition government with the BJP’s 25 seats.
