Rerun voting was mandated by the Election Commission of India (ECI) at eight Arunachal Pradesh polling places. This directive follows altercations that broke out in Arunachal Pradesh on April 19, during the first phase of the Lok Sabha election 2024. It is important to remember that on April 19, votes were cast in the assembly elections for Arunachal.

Reports of violence and damage to electronic voting machines during the assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh surfaced from the state. According to Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Liken Koyu, in a communiqué, the Commission declared the eight polling places invalid on Sunday and ordered new polling to be held on April 24 from 6 am to 2 pm.

The order also specified that the Rumgong assembly constituency in Siang district's Bogne and Molom polling booths will host a recount. On April 19, 76.44 percent of the 8,92,694 registered voters in the northeastern state cast ballots, electing 50 MLAs to the 60-member legislature.

Manipur's reelection on April 22

Recounts were conducted today, April 22, at 11 polling places throughout the state, in accordance with a directive from the Chief Electoral Officer of Manipiur and the ECI. Rerun elections were ordered in response to disturbances during the first round of the Lok Sabha elections, wherein miscreants opened fire at one of the voting places.

Manipur's dilemma

In reelection at 11 polling places in the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, 37.54 percent of voters turned out to cast ballots, according to officials on Monday. The war-torn state of Manipur reported incidents of gunfire, intimidation, the destruction of EVMs at several polling places, and claims of booth capturing on Friday. The two Lok Sabha constituencies, Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur, saw 72% of voters turn out to vote.
