Wayanad by-election Congress food kits: In a significant action taken ahead of the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election, the Election Commission's flying squad seized food kits bearing the photos of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi in the Tholpetty area on Thursday. The kits were reportedly discovered near the residence of a local Congress leader, raising concerns over voter influence tactics.

Allegations of alluring voters

According to Election Commission officials, the food kits were confiscated near a Congress leader’s residence. A young CPM leader alleged that the Congress party was distributing these kits to sway voters in Tholpetty, a claim that has sparked controversy as Election Day approaches.

A report by South India’s Matribhoomi website detailed the allegations; however, Congress leaders leading Priyanka Gandhi’s campaign have denied the accusations, asserting that the party does not engage in such practices to gain voter support. "Our party does not adopt such tactics to win elections," remarked a senior Congress representative.

Priyanka Gandhi’s intensive campaign efforts

Priyanka Gandhi has been actively campaigning in Wayanad since her arrival in Kerala on Sunday. Engaging with local residents, she has conducted multiple rallies daily, attracting substantial crowds, especially women. Her presence underscores Congress's commitment to securing the Wayanad seat, where the by-election is scheduled for November 20.

Rahul Gandhi’s past electoral success in Wayanad

Rahul Gandhi previously won the Wayanad seat by a margin of 3.64 lakh votes in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a follow-up to his 2019 victory in the constituency with a 4.60 lakh vote margin. After losing his Amethi seat in 2019 to Smriti Irani, Rahul contested from both Rae Bareli and Wayanad, securing both seats but ultimately choosing Rae Bareli, thus vacating Wayanad. The Congress party has since positioned Priyanka Gandhi as the candidate for the upcoming by-election.
