EC issues notice to Rahul Gandhi on his ‘panauti’, ‘pickpocket’ remark at PM Modi

The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a show cause notice to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on November 23 for calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'Jebkatra (pickpocket)' and 'Panauti (Jinx)'  during his election campaign in Rajasthan.

BJP demands action against Rahul 

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) approached the ECI demanding to take action against the congress leader for calling the Prime Minister a panauti during an election rally in Rajasthan. Responding to Rahul's remarks, the BJP slammed the and called it 'shameful and disgraceful'.

Earlier, Rahul had said that PM Modi had brought bad luck to India’s cricket team in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final, which he attended in Ahmedabad on November 19.

PM means Panauti Modi, says Rahul

At an election rally in Rajasthan on November 21, Rahul Gandhi said that “PM means Panauti (jinx or ill omen) Modi”, indicating that Modi’s presence in the iconic Ahmedabad stadium, which is named after him during the final match between India and Australia had brought bad luck to the Indian team.  

Addressing the rally in Rajasthan's Balotra, the veteran congress leader allegedly said that the Prime Minister comes on TV and says ‘Hindu-Muslim’, and sometimes goes to a cricket match. It is a different matter that the match was lost. Panauti... PM means Panauti Modi.”

Furthermore, the 52-year-old alleged that PM Modi diverts people’s attention meanwhile industrialist Gautam Adani picks their pockets.
