A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region on Saturday afternoon, triggering tremors that were felt in northern India's Kashmir and Delhi-NCR regions. The quake occurred at 12:17 PM IST at 86 km depth below the earth's crust, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The epicentre was along the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, which is seismically active as a result of tectonic activity. This area is susceptible to earthquakes owing to its geographical location and structure.

Light to moderate shaking was felt in the Kashmir Valley and Delhi-NCR, resulting in panic among the populace. A video recording from Kashmir showed people fleeing a building within seconds of the floor shaking.
There were no reports of immediate casualties or extensive damage from either side of the border. The authorities appear to be in high alert, keeping a close eye on the situation.
