Kerala: A shocking case of extreme ragging has surfaced at Government Nursing College, Kottayam, where first-year students were subjected to months of gruesome physical and mental torture. Following a complaint filed by three junior students, five third-year students have been arrested under the Anti-Ragging Act.
According to the complaint, the ragging began in November 2024 and lasted nearly three months. The victims, all from Thiruvananthapuram, detailed a horrifying ordeal that included:
The perpetrators allegedly recorded videos of the torture and used them to threaten the juniors into silence. They warned that reporting the abuse would ruin their academic future. However, one victim, unable to endure the harassment any longer, confided in his father, who urged him to file a police complaint.
Based on the students' statements, the Kottayam Gandhinagar police took swift action, arresting five senior students who are currently in custody. They are expected to be presented before a magistrate by Wednesday afternoon.
This horrifying incident comes just weeks after a tragic case in Kochi, where a 15-year-old schoolboy died by suicide. His mother alleged that relentless bullying pushed him to take his life. The back-to-back cases have raised serious concerns about student safety in Kerala’s educational institutions.
The Kottayam nursing college ragging case has sent shockwaves across Kerala, exposing the brutal reality of hazing in educational institutions. While the accused have been arrested, the mental and physical scars left on the victims will take much longer to heal. Authorities are under pressure to ensure strict action and prevent such inhumane acts in the future.
