Drunk youth rams Audi into 10 parked vehicles in 'dry state'

Gujarat is a 'dry state' as the diamond city banned it in the year 2023. Gujarat has had a prohibition law since its formulation in 1960, but that hasn't stopped residents from consuming alcohol. According to the report of The Print, bootleggers cover every locality, operating through WhatsApp messages or phone calls.

New Delhi: In an another hit-and-run case, a young individual in Surat, allegedly driving an Audi while intoxicated, collided with approximately 10 parked motorbikes along Canal Road in Vesu, near GD Goenka School. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, though three individuals sustained severe injuries and were promptly transported to the hospital by 108 EMRI ambulance services.

Rinkesh Chandanmal Bhatia, identified as the offender, was immediately arrested by police following the incident. The Audi (registration number GJ05RT5550) came to a stop about 150 meters from the accident site after suffering a tire rupture. Bystanders and commuters aided in apprehending the accused.

Empty liquor container found near incident

Police sources revealed that an empty liquor container and snacks were found inside the Audi, suggesting that Bhatia was intoxicated at the time of the incident. The collision occurred when he lost control of the vehicle, striking parked motorcycles along the Vesu Canal road. The Althan police have filed charges against Bhatia, and investigations are ongoing.

Gujarat is a 'Dry State'

Gujarat is a 'dry state' as the diamond city banned it in the year 2023. Gujarat has had a prohibition law since its formulation in 1960, but that hasn't stopped residents from consuming alcohol. According to the report of The Print, bootleggers cover every locality, operating through WhatsApp messages or phone calls. Like food delivery networks, they deliver the alcohol of your choice to your doorstep in a quick time, and payment is made in cash or digitally. During the state assembly's budget session last year, it was revealed that liquor worth more than Rs 300 crore had been seized over the past two years in the Gujarat. Now, the question arises, from where it came? Who is responsible for this? Why officials are not working to eradicate it?

The fact is that bans don't curb demand, they only make the product hard to get. Bootleggers and corrupt officials step into this gap. A World Health Organization report said that 50 per cent of the alcohol consumed in India is unrecorded and is part of non-tax, counterfiet activity. It argued that prohibition creates restrictions that, in fact, raise the risks to consumers and widen the black market. Gujarat itself has been several such tragedies. Last July, illicit liquor killed 125 people in Baroda, 150 in Ahmedabad, and 42 in Botad.

Hit-and-run case this year
