A deadly accident in Vadodara's Karelibagh locality on Thursday claimed the life of a woman and injured several others when a speeding car smashed into multiple vehicles. The driver, Rakshit Ravish Chaurasia, who is a law student at MS University, was allegedly drunk when he lost control of the car, the police said.

The gruesome crash was captured on CCTV close to Amrapali Complex, with the car traveling at a mind-boggling speed of over 100 kmph. Eyewitnesses described how the vehicle made a sharp turn suddenly, sending pedestrians scurrying in panic. While some escaped, others were trapped in the collision. The negligent driving resulted in an on-the-spot death of a woman, injured four to five seriously, and destroyed three two-wheelers. The injured were immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Accused acts erratically after crash

Rakshit was with Pranshu Chauhan, the car's owner. After the incident, drunk Rakshit walked out of the wrecked black car.. Mera kuch nahi hai, wo gaadi chala raha tha" (Let me go, idiot. I had nothing to do with this, he was driving). Rakshit did not come out from inside, instead, he was shouting his friend's name.

Surrounded by an irate crowd, Rakshit started acting frantically, bellowing, "Another round, another round," followed by the call, "Nikita, Nikita," then chanting "Om Namah Shivay." Incensed by his irresponsible conduct, onlookers attacked him before police stepped in. Rakshit was arrested, while Pranshu escaped the scene and is still at large.

Police investigation underway

Police confirmed that the car was registered to Deon Technology Pvt Ltd. Top police officials, along with the city's BJP president and the local Member of Parliament, went to the accident spot to survey the damage.

Talking to the media, Joint CP Leena Patil confirmed the role of alcohol in the accident. "The accused driver has been arrested. The police are investigating the case, which is a clear case of drunk driving," she said.

Following the tragedy, the ongoing Rangotsav Holi festivities in the area were also canceled. The investigators are now looking into the level of alcohol intake and other possible causes of the crash.
