Driver’s mistake leads to fatal accident in Mumbai: One dead, two injured

A tragic incident unfolded in Kandivli (West) on Friday morning when a man without any driving knowledge crashed a car, resulting in the death of an elderly woman and injuring two others. The accident occurred around 10:45 am.

The driver, Surendra Gupta, mistakenly hit the accelerator instead of the brakes, according to police reports. Gupta has been arrested along with the car's owner, Rajendra Gupta, who was seated beside him during the incident.

Saurabhkumar Yadav, 19, one of the injured victims, recounted the terrifying moments to the police. He was walking along Poisar-Gaondevi Road when he heard screams and suddenly found himself struck by a white car. He landed on the car’s bonnet but sustained only minor injuries. Nearby, he saw an elderly woman on the ground, bleeding heavily, and another man with injuries to his hands and legs.

Unlicensed and Untrained

Surendra Gupta, who was behind the wheel, did not possess even a learner’s licence, the police confirmed. After the accident, Surendra and Rajendra Gupta quickly placed the injured woman in an auto-rickshaw and rushed her to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital, where she was declared dead upon arrival.

Circumstances Leading to the Crash

Prior to the accident, Rajendra had parked the vehicle when Surendra approached him, requesting a chance to drive. Despite his lack of driving skills, Rajendra allowed him to take the wheel. When Surendra attempted to drive, he mistakenly accelerated, causing the car to speed forward and strike the victims.

Legal Action

Both Surendra and Rajendra Gupta have been arrested and are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

This tragic event underscores the dangers of untrained individuals operating vehicles and the severe consequences that can follow.
