A shocking incident involving stray dogs attacking a newborn has ignited outrage in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh. The heart-wrenching scene unfolded at the Lalitpur Medical College on Tuesday, where dogs were spotted devouring the head of a newborn. By the time bystanders managed to scare the dogs away, the damage had already been done—the baby's head had been consumed. The hospital administration, however, has distanced itself from the tragedy, placing the blame on the family for alleged negligence.

Newborn's struggle for life

The infant, born on Sunday, February 9, at the District Women’s Hospital in Lalitpur, was in fragile health. Weighing just 1.3kg and suffering from congenital defects, the baby was transferred to the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) for intensive care. Dr. Meenakshi Singh, the Chief Medical Officer, described the child’s condition as dire.

“The child was born with congenital defects,” Dr. Singh explained. “The child's head wasn’t fully developed. He didn’t have a spine either and weighed 1.3kg. He was alive and had a heart rate of 80 beats per minute (bpm) when we moved him to SNCU. We were not sure if the child would survive,” she added. Sadly, the baby passed away by evening.

The discovery of tragic incident

The hospital staff discovered the grim scene on Tuesday afternoon when a child's headless body was found on the ground. According to Dr. Singh, the family had abandoned the body, which still had the hospital tag attached, confirming the infant's identity.

“We believe the family threw the child's body in a plastic bag. The child had the hospital tag attached, which is how we could identify,” said Dr. Singh.

Hospital scrutiny and investigation

Following the discovery, Lalitpur Medical College Principal D Nath ordered an investigation. A committee of four doctors has been tasked with submitting a full report within 24 hours. This incident is not the first time the hospital has faced accusations of negligence.
