New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a nationwide strike, commencing at 6 AM on Saturday, in response to the growing concerns over the safety and security of medical professionals. This 24-hour strike follows the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkatas RG Kar Hospital, an incident that has sparked outrage and protests across the country.Demands for safety, security measuresThe IMA has outlined a series of demands aimed at improving the safety and security of doctors and other medical staff. Among these is the designation of hospitals as safe zones and the implementation of a comprehensive policy to address and prevent violence against healthcare professionals. The association emphasized the need for a central law that would strengthen existing state legislation, particularly through amendments to the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897, to better protect hospitals and their staff. The IMA condemned the mob violence that erupted at RG Kar Hospital following the tragic incident, pointing out the lack of organized security measures that could have prevented such chaos. The associations statement read, The RG Kar incident has brought to light the dual issues of violence in hospitals: the barbaric crime due to inadequate safe spaces for women and the lawlessness caused by the absence of structured security.Strike to maintain essential services While the strike will see a withdrawal of most medical services, the IMA has assured that essential services, including casualty wards, will remain operational to avoid any critical impact on patient care. However, the association is firm in its stance, calling for immediate action to address the safety concerns of the medical community.IMAs five key demandsThe IMAs letter to the authorities includes five key demands, all focused on enhancing the safety and working conditions of healthcare workers. These include the installation of CCTV cameras, an increase in security personnel, and the provision of safe resting areas for professionals working long shifts. The association also called for a thorough and expedited investigation into the trainee doctors death, along with appropriate compensation for her family.
