A Chennai couple’s decision to deliver their baby at home without medical supervision has sparked widespread outrage and prompted police intervention. The couple reportedly followed instructions from a WhatsApp group comprising over 1,000 members advocating home births.
Manoharan (36) and Sukanya (32), members of the WhatsApp group Home Birth Experience, relied solely on advice shared in the group to manage their third child’s delivery. The group includes individuals who post guidance on delivering babies at home. Despite already having two daughters aged 8 and 4, the couple chose not to undergo any medical check-ups during Sukanya’s third pregnancy, raising concerns over the risks involved.
On November 17, when Sukanya went into labour, the couple decided against hospital care. Manoharan reportedly managed the delivery himself with step-by-step instructions from the WhatsApp group. The baby was safely delivered, but the incident quickly gained traction online, sparking heated debates about medical negligence and unsafe practices.
Following the incident, a public health officer lodged a complaint at Kundrathur Police Station, citing violations of medical safety protocols. The officer emphasised that Manoharan’s actions disregarded established healthcare guidelines, potentially endangering the mother and child.
During police enquiries, it was revealed that the couple’s decisions were heavily influenced by the online community. Authorities are now investigating the group’s activities and determining appropriate legal action.
The couple’s choice has drawn widespread criticism on social media, with many condemning their disregard for professional medical care. Experts have also expressed concern over the risks of relying on unverified online advice for critical healthcare decisions.
