New Delhi: The search operation for Aditya Vardhan Singh, a bureaucrat from Uttar Pradesh, entered its third day on Monday. Singh was tragically swept away by the powerful currents of the Ganga River on Saturday at Nanamau Ghat in Bilhaur town, located in the Kanpur Nagar district. Despite the passage of two days, rescue teams are still diligently scouring the area, leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to locate Singh, who was caught off guard by the strong waters while at the ghat. The incident has sparked widespread concern, and the search operation is expected to continue until Singh is found.
Aditya Vardhan Singh, a deputy director in the Uttar Pradesh Health Department, reportedly ventured into deeper waters at the ghat to have his photograph taken by friends. According to initial police investigations, Singh had crossed the safety warning markers while attempting to offer ‘arghya’ to the sun. Despite knowing how to swim, he became trapped in the powerful current.
“Our preliminary investigation has revealed that he wanted to be photographed while offering ‘arghya’ to the sun. He crossed the warning mark. Though he knew how to swim, he got trapped in a strong current,” said Rajesh Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), in a statement to TOI.
Bilhaur Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ajay Kumar Trivedi reported that the search operation, which involves the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), flood units, police, and private divers, resumed on Sunday morning. However, as of the latest update, the search team has yet to locate Singh.
“We resumed the search Sunday morning. However, we have not been successful in locating Aditya Vardhan Singh,” Trivedi said.
Singh’s friends have raised concerns regarding the actions of private divers at the ghat. They alleged that the divers demanded ₹10,000 for their services and refused to start the rescue operation until payment was received. According to the friends, by the time the payment was made, Singh had already been carried away by the current.
In response to these allegations, ACP Trivedi clarified that the divers had requested money to purchase fuel for their steamer. He assured that if the allegations proved true, legal action would be considered against the divers.
“If there is any truth in the allegations, we will take legal action against the divers,” Trivedi added.
