The deportations of over 100 Indian nationals primarily belonging to Punjab, Haryana and Gujarat (PTI)
Delhi: On Thursday, the Congress party took a significant step in the Lok Sabha by moving an adjournment motion, demanding a thorough discussion on the recent deportations of over 100 Indian nationals by the United States. The motion, led by Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, highlighted the deeply troubling and humiliating conditions under which these deportations were carried out. The deportees, who primarily hailed from Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat, were subjected to distressing treatment, raising alarms over their basic human dignity and rights.
The motion specifically pointed out that the deportees, including 25 women, 12 minors, and 79 men, were shackled and allegedly treated in a degrading manner during the deportation process. "The deportations of over 100 Indian nationals primarily belonging to Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat have been carried out under conditions that are deeply distressing and humiliating," the motion read. Congress emphasized that such actions called for immediate attention to safeguard the rights and dignity of Indian citizens abroad.
The motion further stressed the urgency of addressing this issue to prevent the ongoing dehumanization of Indians, demanding that the Indian government take a firm stand to protect its citizens' rights globally.
On Wednesday, a US C-17 military aircraft landed in Amritsar, carrying 104 Indian immigrants who had been deported under the Trump administration's latest crackdown. The deportees were primarily from Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat, with smaller numbers from Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Chandigarh. This deportation marked a significant step in the US government's intensified efforts to enforce stricter immigration policies.
The timing of the deportation, just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Washington, DC, for discussions with US President Donald Trump, raised questions about the political undertones of the deportation process. The deportees were swiftly questioned by various Indian security agencies, including the Punjab Police and intelligence agencies, upon their return to India. The purpose of these inquiries was to check if any of the deportees had a criminal record.
By 6:45 pm on the same day, the deportees from Punjab were taken to their respective hometowns in police vehicles after completing the necessary formalities. Similarly, the deportees from Haryana were also escorted to their native places by the state police.
