Discontent in JDU over party's support to Wakf Bill, leader resigns amid voting in Parliament

In a letter to Nitish Kumar, Ansari said he was "disappointed" with the JD(U)'s support to the Centre on the Wakf issue. Ansari said the Wakf Amendment Bill was "against our principles." "I am disappointed that I gave so many years of my life to the party," he said in the letter written in Hindi.

New Delhi: Discontent is growing in the Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) over the party's support to the Wakf Amendment Bill in Parliament. Senior Janata Dal (United) leader Mohammad Qasim Ansari resigned from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's party over the party's support to the passage of the Wakf Amendment Bill. In a letter to Nitish Kumar, Ansari said he was "disappointed" with the JD(U)'s support to the Centre on the Wakf issue. Ansari said the Wakf Amendment Bill was "against our principles." "I am disappointed that I gave so many years of my life to the party," he said in the letter written in Hindi.

Discontent is growing among JDU's Muslim leaders

The Waqf Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha and is being debated in the Rajya Sabha, but many Muslim leaders have expressed discontent over the Bill. Senior JD(U) leader Mohammad Qasim resigned from the party in protest against the party's support to the Waqf Bill. Meanwhile, JD(U) MLC Ghulam Gaus and the party's national general secretary Ghulam Rasool Baliyavi have also expressed their displeasure over the issue. Sources have said that discontent among Muslim leaders in the JD(U) is growing and more resignations may follow.

Bill passed by Lok Sabha

After the Lok Sabha, the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. The bill is still under discussion in the Rajya Sabha. Earlier, the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. 288 votes were cast in support of the bill, while 236 votes were cast against it. The Congress party has called it unconstitutional and a bill that takes away the rights of Muslims.

Wakf bill will be cancelled when new government is formed

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP and said that the BJP does politics of dividing the country. She said that it will be repealed through amendment 'when a new government is formed after removing the current government'. Talking to reporters, the Chief Minister said that when a new government is formed after removing the current government, we will bring a new amendment to neutralize this Waqf Bill brought by the BJP.  

Mamata Banerjee accused BJP of dividing the country

Mamata alleged that the BJP has brought this Waqf Bill to divide the country. In a statement on Wednesday, Banerjee criticized the BJP and said that this is a divisive agenda. She said that my MPs are in Delhi to speak on the Waqf issue. The 'Jumla Party' has only one agenda, to divide the country. They believe in 'divide and rule'." Let us tell you that the ruling NDA strongly defended the bill and called it beneficial for the minorities, while the opposition parties termed it 'anti-Muslim'.
