New Delhi: The Kolkata Police on Friday dismissed allegations made by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that the crime scene at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered earlier this month, had been compromised.

What are CBI's allegations?

The controversy erupted during a Supreme Court hearing, where the CBI claimed that the seminar hall, the crime scene, had been tampered with and that the victim's family was misled into believing their daughter's death was a suicide. The central agency pointed out that the first FIR was not filed until 11:45 pm, after the victim's cremation, raising suspicions about the integrity of the investigation.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, expressed concern over the delayed FIR and the alleged alteration of the crime scene. "The most shocking fact is that the first FIR was registered after cremation, and the crime scene was altered," Mehta said. He also criticized the hospital administration for failing to handle the case with the necessary sensitivity, noting that Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the then-principal, was dismissed from his role.

Kolkata police's response

In response, the Kolkata Police clarified that the crime scene had not been tampered with and that everyone present in the viral photograph from the scene was fully authorized. Indira Mukherjee, DCP Central of Kolkata Police, stated, "The area was cordoned off, and the body was behind it. Everyone in the picture is part of the investigation team."

The police further explained that the photograph in question was taken on August 9, after the inquest had been completed. The police strongly rejected any claims of compromising the investigation or misleading the victim’s family.

Kolkata rape-murder case

The incident occurred on August 9, when the semi-naked body of the second-year postgraduate student was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The forensic report later confirmed that the doctor was raped and murdered by Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer attached to the Kolkata Police.

The gruesome crime has triggered widespread protests across the country, including in Kolkata, with demands for justice and stricter laws to prevent such heinous acts against women.
