Ajay Maken, Congress general secretary on Friday alleged that Congress party's accounts have been frozen by the Income Tax department and called it the "freeze of democracy".

The statement from Maken came during a press conference held at the AICC headquarters in Delhi. He said, "I have very disturbing news to share with all of you. The accounts of the Congress party have been frozen and also those of the Youth Congress have been frozen."

"We got information yesterday that banks are not honoring the cheque we are issuing. On further investigation, we got to know that the Youth Congress bank accounts have been frozen. The accounts of the Congress party have also been seized. Income tax asked for Rs 210 crore recovery from Youth Congress and Congress party. The crowdfunding money in our accounts has been frozen. Just 2 weeks before elections when the opposition's accounts are frozen, it is equivalent to freezing the democracy" he added.

While speaking he lashed out asking the motive behind the alleged freeze of party accounts ahead of the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

"When the principal opposition party's accounts have been frozen just two weeks before the announcement of the national elections. Do you think democracy is alive in our country?" Maken remarked.

"We don't have money, we don't have money to pay the salaries, not only Nyay Yatra but all political activities will be impacted. We appealed in the Income Tax appellate tribunal the day before yesterday and the hearing is going on. We believe in the judiciary," he added.

Why were Congress's bank accounts sealed?

While speaking at the press conference, Makan called the reasons ridiculous.

1. We were supposed to submit our accounts by 31st December 2019, but we were a little late. Because of this our accounts were sealed.
2. 2018-19 was the time of elections, in which Congress spent Rs 199 crore. In this, our MLAs and MPs had deposited only Rs 14 lakh 40 thousand in cash, which was their salary.
Because of this, a penalty of Rs 210 crore has been imposed on Congress.

He further lashed out at the Central government saying that the bank accounts of BJP should be frozen, because the unconstitutional corporate bonds that they have deposited in their accounts are unconstitutional according to the Supreme Court. He further alleged that this is clear from this step that democracy is no more in our country. It seems that an attempt is being made to bring 'one party system' in the country.
