The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has slapped a hefty fine of Rs 98 lakh on Air India for operating flights with unqualified crew members, according to a statement by the aviation regulator. In addition to this, separate fines of Rs 6 lakh and Rs 3 lakh have also been imposed on Air India's Director of Operations and Director of Training, respectively, for their roles in the violations.

In an official statement, the DGCA emphasized the severity of the issue, stating, "The concerned pilot has been warned to exercise caution to prevent such occurrences in the future. M/s Air India Limited operated a flight commanded by a non-trainer line captain paired with a non-line-released first officer, which has been viewed by the regulator as a serious scheduling incident with significant safety ramifications."

The incident came to light after Air India voluntarily reported the issue to the DGCA on July 10. In response, the aviation watchdog launched a thorough investigation, uncovering multiple regulatory violations and deficiencies among several post holders and staff members within the airline.

Investigation and Implications

The DGCA's investigation revealed that Air India's lapse in ensuring that only qualified crew members operate its flights posed a serious safety risk. The pairing of an unqualified captain and first officer not only violated regulatory provisions but also compromised the overall safety of the flight. The regulator's firm action serves as a stern reminder to all airlines about the critical importance of adhering to safety and training standards.
