A five-month-old baby was mauled to death by a dog at Tandur in Telangana's Vikarabad district today. The boy, Babusai, was sleeping at his home, unattended, when the dog entered and attacked him. The baby's father, Dattu, killed the dog after finding his son dead. Local media reports say the boy's parents had stepped out for work.

Dog attacks make it heartbreaking

The owner of the apartment has denied this, claiming the dog was a stray, despite some locals claiming Dattu's dog was a pet at work. The terrifying event has drawn attention to the nation's rising number of dog attacks and bites. In December of last year, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare released a study stating that there had been a 26.5% annual increase in dog bite incidents between 2022 and 2023.

Last month, stray dogs attacked and murdered at least two youngsters. A 2.5-year-old girl was fatally mauled by stray dogs on April 14 while she was playing close to a Hyderabad apartment complex that was still under construction. On April 13, a four-year-old child in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, met her demise at the hands of stray dogs.

Pet dogs and incidents

Pet dogs are also brought up in the discussion of dog bite incidents. Authorities have been forced to take notice after watching viral recordings of pet dogs biting kids in enclosed areas like elevators. Many local organizations have released pet-owner recommendations, including one requesting that dog owners keep their pets on leash in public spaces.

The question of  dogs being pets

The topic of whether particular breeds of dogs belong as pets in residential areas has come up as a result of the dog attacks. The Center requested in March that states outlaw the breeding and sale of twenty-three vicious dog breeds, such as Pitbull Terriers, American Bulldogs, Rottweilers, and Mastiffs. The rule also stipulated that anyone currently owning these breeds as pets should sterilize them immediately.
