New Delhi: Over 40 trains in Delhi experienced delays on Sunday morning due to dense fog that also affected rail and flight services the previous day. This ongoing weather phenomenon has created significant disruptions in transportation across the region.

Impact of Fog on Train Services

On Sunday, 41 trains were reported late, with several facing delays exceeding three hours. Among the most affected were the KIR-ASR Express, Lichchavi Express, Gorkhdham Express, Purushottam Express, Mahabodhi Express, Malwa Express, and Dakshin Express. The Indian Railways noted that on Saturday alone, 47 trains were delayed until 6 AM due to the persistent fog conditions.

Visibility Issues and Air Quality Concerns

Delhi has been grappling with heavy fog recently, which has not only reduced visibility but also disrupted air travel and road traffic. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a temperature of 11.2 degrees Celsius at 5:30 AM on Saturday, contributing to these adverse conditions. Furthermore, the air quality in Delhi has deteriorated; after a brief improvement to 'poor' levels, it plunged back to 'very poor' on Sunday morning, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 335 around 7 AM.

AQI Fluctuations and Government Response

The AQI had shown some improvement on Saturday, registering at 248 at the same time. According to the AQI classification, values between zero and 50 are considered 'good,' while those between 301 and 400 fall into the 'very poor' category. In response to fluctuating air quality levels, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) decided on January 17 to lift certain restrictions under Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), following a notable improvement from 'Severe' to 'Very Poor.' This decision was based on a review by the GRAP Sub-Committee, which attributed the positive changes to favorable meteorological conditions.

As Delhi continues to battle dense fog and its associated challenges, residents are advised to stay updated about train schedules and air quality reports. The situation remains dynamic as authorities monitor both transportation disruptions and environmental conditions closely.
