Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has approved urgent action against four doctors accused of denying medical assistance to a critically injured patient who later died.

The chief minister forwarded the health department's proposal recommending the dismissal and suspension of the doctors to the Lieutenant Governor for final approval. The proposal cited a "complete lack of empathy and professionalism" by the medical officials involved.

What happened on January 3?

The depressing incident occurred on January 3 when a man jumped from a moving police van sustaining serious injuries. Police were detaining him in a case and took the injured man first to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital which referred him to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital.

However, the doctor on duty at GTB Hospital allegedly refused to admit him. The police next took the patient to Lok Nayak Hospital but claimed the doctor there also denied treatment and instead referred the patient to RML Hospital.

The injured man succumbed to his injuries before reaching RML Hospital due to an alleged delay in receiving medical care.

What is Delhi government’s stance on this matter?

The Delhi government promptly issued show-cause notices to the medical directors of GTB and LNH hospitals and investigated the matter.

The probe found merit in allegations of unprofessional conduct and lack of empathy by the doctors involved. As a result, Kejriwal has approved the suspension of one doctor each from GTB and LNH along with the dismissal of one doctor from each hospital.

Delhi govt not tolerate medical negligence’: Arvind Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal said the Delhi government views this incident seriously and will not tolerate medical negligence of any kind. He reiterated the administration's commitment to providing the best healthcare facilities for citizens.

The accused doctors will have an opportunity to present their side during departmental proceedings before a final decision on disciplinary action. However, the CM's approval of the health department's proposal indicates strong disapproval of the conduct in this case.
