Rahul Gandhi Jalebi controversy (X)

Rahul Gandhi’s jalebi controversy: Rahul Gandhi’s comments about jalebis during his Haryana election campaign have provided new ammunition for the BJP, as the party celebrates its third consecutive win in the state. On Tuesday evening, the BJP escalated the issue by sending a kilogram of jalebis addressed to Rahul Gandhi at the Indian National Congress headquarters in New Delhi.

"On behalf of all the workers of Bharatiya Janata Party Haryana, jalebi has been sent to Rahul Gandhi's home," tweeted the BJP Haryana’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.

What is the 'Jalebi' controversy?

During a rally in Gohana on October 3, in the lead-up to the Haryana Assembly polls, Gandhi held up a box of jalebis from the famous ‘Matu Ram Halwai.’ He highlighted the craftsmanship of the sweet maker and argued that these jalebis should not only be sold across India but also exported internationally to create jobs.

He seized the moment to criticize the BJP and the central government's economic policies.

What did Rahul Gandhi say?

"I tasted the jalebi in the car and immediately messaged my sister Priyanka, telling her that I had just eaten the best jalebi of my life. I'm bringing a box for you as well," Gandhi said, praising the hard work and dedication of the local vendor. "This involves the blood and sweat of a person from Haryana who has been doing this for years," he added.

Gandhi expressed his vision that this jalebi should be available across India and beyond. "This jalebi should be available in America, Japan, and the rest of the world," he said.

He explained that increasing the reach of such businesses could massively boost employment. "If 100 people are working at his shop today, imagine how 10,000 could work in his factory if these jalebis are sold globally."

However, Gandhi also criticized the Modi government’s economic policies, claiming that initiatives like GST and demonetization had harmed small businesses, including those like Matu Ram's. He argued that while big businesses receive bank loans easily, smaller enterprises struggle. "If Matu Ram asks for a loan from the bank, they won't give him one. The banks only give money to Adani and Ambani," he asserted.

BJP’s response to the 'Jalebi' comment

The BJP was quick to capitalize on Gandhi’s remarks. A video on social media showed a BJP worker from Assam delivering jalebis to the Congress office in Lakhimpur, Assam.

At the party’s headquarters, Kamalam, in Gujarat, State BJP President and Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Paatil made jalebis to celebrate the party’s victory in the Haryana elections.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad took a swipe at Gandhi, saying, "Rahul Gandhi is talking about setting up a jalebi factory in America... Before doing that, he should learn how to make jalebi first. He doesn’t do his homework."

Celebrating the BJP's victory, UP Industrial Development Minister Nand Gopal Gupta commented, "The people of Haryana have put a lock on the Congress’ factory of lies, rumors, and empty promises!" He added, "Modi hai toh Mumkin Hai!" (If Modi is there, it’s possible).

"Today, Rahul Gandhi and Congress leaders must be finding even jalebi bitter because the public has sweetened the BJP's mouth by giving us the mandate of victory," Gupta posted on X in Hindi.

Prayagraj (West) MLA Sidharth Nath Singh echoed this sentiment, declaring, "After seeing the Haryana election results, I will send Prayagraj's jalebi to Rahul Gandhi."

Celebrations Across BJP offices

In Rajasthan, BJP leaders also celebrated with jalebis. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma posted pictures of himself making jalebis at the party office alongside state president Madan Rathore. "After the historic victory of the BJP in Haryana, I made jalebis with our state president Madan Rathore and shared them with all the workers. Congratulations to everyone on this massive win," Sharma wrote on X.

Looking at the Matu Ram Halwai story

According to a PTI report, Matu Ram Halwai’s jalebis have a rich history dating back to 1958. The business, now run by his grandsons Raman Gupta and Neeraj Gupta, has become a local landmark. "It started as a small shop, but as word spread, even top politicians traveling through Gohana would stop to enjoy the sweet," Raman Gupta told the news agency.
