Delhiites find respite after rain amidst sweltering heatwave; Monsoon expected soon

New Delhi: Delhi experienced a welcome change in weather on Friday as scattered showers brought respite from the scorching heat. The day began with cold winds, followed by alternating periods of sunshine and cloud cover. By early afternoon, thick clouds gathered, leading to intermittent rainfall across various parts of the city. This pre-monsoon rain lasted between 10 to 20 minutes in different areas, prompting enthusiastic reactions from residents who were seen enjoying the showers, with children playing in the streets.

Rainfall in Delhi NCR 

According to reports from the Meteorological Department, several areas received varying amounts of rainfall by 5:30 pm. Pitampura recorded the highest at 33.5 mm, followed by Rajghat with 32 mm, and Ridge with 6.2 mm. Notably, areas like Safdarjung, Palam, and Lodhi Road also saw significant rainfall, providing relief to areas previously affected by intense heat. However, Najafgarh remained dry.

Maximum temperature on Friday 

Despite the pleasant rainfall, humidity levels increased after the showers ceased, causing discomfort for some residents. The maximum temperature on Friday reached 40.4 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature remained at a typical 28.4 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels fluctuated between 47 to 72 percent throughout the day.

Weather on Weekend 

Looking ahead, the weather is expected to clear up starting Saturday, with temperatures rising gradually. On Saturday, the maximum is predicted to reach 41 degrees Celsius, and by Sunday, it could escalate to 43 degrees Celsius. Heat wave conditions are forecasted for June 24th and 25th, with temperatures potentially soaring to 44 degrees Celsius during these days.

Meteorologists anticipate clouds returning on June 26th, accompanied by strong winds, with temperatures hovering around 43 degrees Celsius. There's a possibility of dust storms and light rain on June 27th, with temperatures reaching up to 42 degrees Celsius.

Monsoon expected in Delhi NCR 

Monsoon is expected to arrive in Delhi between June 27th and 30th. Monsoon winds, dark clouds, thunderstorms, and intermittent rain are anticipated during the last few days of June.

The heat index on Friday peaked at 53 degrees Celsius, reflecting the intense conditions Delhi residents have endured recently.

As Delhiites eagerly await the monsoon's arrival, preparations are underway to cope with the forthcoming changes in weather patterns, which are expected to bring relief from the persistent heatwave conditions.
