Delhi recorded its second straight night of lowest temperatures this winter season, with the mercury plunging to 3.6 degrees Celsius according to meteorological authorities. The frigid conditions prompted a red alert from the Meteorological Department for cold and dense fog in Delhi and surrounding areas.

Dense fog disrupts train service

Visibility fell to barely 200 meters in parts of the city early in the morning as thick fog engulfed the national capital, the India Meteorological Department said.

The extreme cold has disrupted transport networks, delaying around 20 trains to Delhi by up to six hours. Several other parts of northern India are also in the grip of cold waves and foggy weather.

IMD issues Yellow, Red alerts

Yellow alerts have been issued in Rajasthan and nearby states, while red alerts denoting severe conditions are in place for Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. A similar harsh winter climate is likely across the region over the coming days.

A yellow alert has also been issued for the national capital for the next 3 days as cold wave conditions continue to persist in the city.

Dense fog persists across many regions in the country

“Dense to very dense fog reported in isolated sections of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and northeast India. Dense fog pockets recorded in parts of Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh,” the weather department noted.

Residents have been advised to take precautions against the cold, while traffic authorities are gearing up to manage potential disruption. But experts say the intense winter is not unexpected for this time of year.

With temperatures set to drop further tonight, Delhi’s record for coldest night this season may fall for the third straight day.
