Delhi sees light rainfall, IMD forecasts thunderstorms for northern states

The capital city of Delhi and adjoining areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) awoke on Sunday morning to light rainfall, with the minimum temperature settling at 10 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD Delhi weather prediction

The weather agency forecasted that Delhi would see a generally overcast sky with some light rain showers and gusty winds throughout the day.

The maximum temperature in the capital is expected to reach 19 degrees Celsius, the IMD stated. On Saturday, dense fog had enveloped Delhi in the morning hours, but skies cleared up and the day remained sunny. 

Visibility at Delhi's Safdarjung observatory and Palam station was recorded at 1500 meters and 800 meters respectively at 8:30 am. Meanwhile, 17 trains heading to Delhi were delayed due to the foggy conditions.

Rain predictions in other regions

Apart from Delhi, the IMD predicted thunderstorms and lightning in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

"Thunderstorms/lightning accompanied with gusty winds of 30-40 mph are likely over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh," the weather department said.

Orange alert in Himachal for snowfall

For Himachal Pradesh, the IMD issued an orange alert forecasting snowfall on 4 and 5 February. Light to moderate snow is expected at most places and heavy snow likely at isolated places in the mid and high hills, along with thunder, lightning and hailstorms in the lower regions till 6 February. 

"Hail is possible at isolated places over Himachal and Rajasthan...Cold day conditions at isolated places over Himachal," the IMD stated.

Earlier, Himachal Pradesh saw moderate to heavy snowfall in several parts on 31 January and 1 February. Officials said a total of 485 roads, including four national highways, were shut in the state due to the inclement weather.
