In a sweeping victory in Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has swiftly begun implementing its agenda. The first step in this direction was the announcement of changing the name of the Muslim-majority Mustafabad assembly seat. Newly elected BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht, who won the Mustafabad seat, declared his intention to rename the constituency to either Shivpuri or Shiv Vihar.

A resounding victory in Mustafabad

Mohan Singh Bisht triumphed in the Muslim-majority area of Mustafabad with a remarkable performance, securing 85,215 votes. His closest competitor, Adil Ahmed Khan of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was defeated by a margin of 17,578 votes. With this victory, Bisht has now set his sights on fulfilling his promise to change the name of Mustafabad.

A public poll for name change

Bisht emphasized that he would conduct a public referendum before finalizing the name change. He stated, "We will hold a public survey and then change the name of Mustafabad to either Shiv Vihar or Shivpuri. I had pledged that if I win, I will change the name, and I will ensure that this promise is fulfilled."

In the 2020 elections, the Mustafabad seat was claimed by AAP's Haji Yunus. However, this year's election saw a fierce four-cornered contest. The BJP placed its trust in Bisht's leadership, while Congress, AAP, and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) focused on caste-based politics.

AIMIM's Taha Hussain and other contestants

AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, fielded Taha Hussain, a controversial figure accused in the Delhi riots, who secured third place with 33,474 votes. Congress’s Ali Mahendi finished fourth with 11,763 votes.

Mohan Singh Bisht, who has represented Karawal Nagar five times, made a successful shift to Mustafabad with BJP’s ticket and maintained his political dominance, securing a convincing win in this new constituency.
