Earthquake in Delhi NCR (X/SiddhuVijender)
New Delhi: Mild tremors were felt across Delhi and much of Northern India following a significant earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 that struck Pakistan on Wednesday. The quake, which originated near the Dera Ghazi Khan region in southwestern Punjab, also affected the Pakistani cities of Islamabad and Lahore. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The seismic activity was not confined to Pakistan. Tremors were reported in several Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. Even Afghanistan experienced the quake's impact, feeling sudden tremors.
This incident marks the second time in recent weeks that Delhi and its surrounding areas have experienced noticeable tremors. On August 29, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Afghanistan, with the epicenter located 255 kilometers below the Earth's surface. The recurrence of these tremors highlights the region's susceptibility to seismic activity.
Social media users shared videos capturing the effects of the quake, showing ceiling fans, chairs, and other objects shaking during the tremors. One user from Bikaner, Rajasthan, commented, "Major tremors felt in Delhi NCR," reflecting widespread concern over the shaking.

Delhi's geographical location renders it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. The city is situated in an active seismic zone due to its proximity to the Himalayas. India is divided into four seismic zones, with Zone V being the most seismically active. Delhi falls under Seismic Zone IV, which is prone to significant seismic activity.
