New Delhi: The Delhi government has declared a strict ban on the production, sale, and use of fireworks in the national capital, effective immediately and lasting until January 1, 2025. This move is part of the city's efforts to combat rising air pollution, particularly during the winter months when pollution levels tend to spike.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced the decision, emphasizing that the prohibition extends to all forms of firecrackers, including their online sale and delivery. The measure is designed to reduce the harmful effects of firecracker-related pollution, especially during festive seasons when their usage is typically high.

Delhi government on the probe

To ensure the ban is rigorously enforced, the Delhi government will collaborate with multiple agencies, including the Delhi Police, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the Revenue Department. Together, they will develop a comprehensive action plan to monitor compliance across the city.

"The ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers will remain in force till January 1, 2025," Minister Rai reiterated. He also noted that this restriction is a critical component of the government’s 21-point winter action plan, aimed at reducing pollution levels in Delhi. This comprehensive ban follows years of increasing concern about the city’s air quality, particularly during winter when pollution from firecrackers significantly worsens the already hazardous conditions.
